Rules and Regulations ’08 season

Preface: This fantasy football league was created for one purpose - to have big fun! In order to make the league as enjoyable as possible, we have kept the dues at a reasonable level, to where playing fees won’t break your wallet, but still make the payoffs something to get excited about. I like to think of the League of the Leaf as a friendly league where opponents will call each other if the other team has players on a bye week and share drafting tips over a cold brew. We try not to enforce basic rules and hope that managers will not let their competitive side overtake their friendly, sportsmanship side, as this is just a game among friends. If you are out to make a buck, I suggest that you find another league with bigger payoffs. This league is invitational for a reason – not to have dickheads! So the question I often get asked is, "What is the leaf?"

Membership:
The league shall be limited to 10 - 12 teams and the seasonal membership dues are $75 per team. Dues must be paid in full to join before the draft, this is necessary to fill in slots for "no-shows" and make sure we have an even number of teams. Past members will get first chance at joining, after which it will be open to new members.
Finances:
All the cash collected via membership dues will be paid out in the form of prizes, minus operating expenses. League operating expenses consist of a YahooPlus membership fee of $125 and a trophy charge of $25, which includes a keeper trophy and yearly engraving and maintenance for the traveling trophy. The annual total charge of $150 is subtracted from the pot and the rest of the bounty is paid out in cold, hard cash. That’s right jerky, no checks or other nonsense, just Benjamins! (unless managers do not show up to the prize party, in which case a check will be mailed.) We have a > 86.1% payout. (actually higher if you include, the draftkits, StatTracker and other YahooPlus features.)

Prizes: The Championship prize consists of cash, a keeper trophy, a right to host a perpetual trophy and a Yahoo prize of his or her choosing (trophy or T-shirt). Cash prizes will also be awarded to the first and second place teams of the regular season, along with the team with the highest points in a single game. Each round win in the playoffs will also be rewarded with a cash prize. It is possible for one person to win the Champion, 1st Division, 2nd rd. prize and the high point prize for a total sweep of four payouts - the "Leaf Sweep. "

For example, the "Leaf Sweep" if the first place division team won high points and the championship in a 12 team league, they would claim $450 = [$150 (1st div) + $100 (2nd rd. playoffs) + $125 (champion) +$75 (hi pts) ]

* (Since the 1st and 2nd place teams in the division have a bye the first round of playoffs, they cannot win a 1st rd. playoff prize.)

A third place team that won only the championship in a 12 team league would claim $275 = [$50 (1st rd. playoffs) + $100 (2nd rd. playoffs) + $125 (champion)]

Trophy:
That's right boyz 'n girlz we now have a perpetual (traveling) trophy as well as a keeper trophy! Let your fantasy team (and you of course) become part of history with your very own brass detail plate mounted on the league’s perpetual trophy. You will also have the right to retain the trophy until the playoffs come around next season and brag to all of your friends about how you masterminded each move from the draft to the final championship game ... or just tell them the truth - that it was all just pot luck.

The champion will have the option to retain the trophy until playoffs of the following season. If the current champion does not participate in a new season, the trophy must be returned prior to the new season’s draft. The champion is responsible for the well-being of the trophy, as well as its safe return to the commish the next season. Any damage or loss of the trophy is the sole responsibility of the current guardian, the trophy’s value is $150 USD. The Commish, Teja Berberich, is the sole owner of the trophy and has the right to ask for its return at any time, without a rhyme or reason.
Draft Order:
- Serpentine style, the order reverses each round so the team that starts the first round ends the second, while the team that ends the first round starts the second. The previous season's playoff results determine draft order. Last place gets first choice and champion goes last; any new league teams are added to the end in order that they register.

Some managers prefer to set their draft order via yahoo (edit your list and set the autopilot) and then just sit back; in this case you are welcome to just join us, have some beer and pizza and watch the chaos unfold. It is suggested to rank you players – even if participating in the live draft – because Internet connection problems have been known to occur. You have been warned!!!

The online draft may last several hours and requires a Java-enabled browser; you may be unable to participate if you are using AOL as your internet service provider, or access the web from behind a firewall. Test your system to see if it is draft compatible.

For the draft you have the following choices:

  1. Let yahoo pick your team.
    a. No need to attend draft.
    b. Yahoo will fill all the positions and pick your bench.

  2. Select your own top players and then set Yahoo on auto.
    a. No need to attend draft
    b. Yahoo will pick your players and then fill all positions.

  3. Actively participate in live draft from home (ranking your pics is still suggested)
    a. Login to Internet required.
    b. You are responsible to fill all positions.

  4. Actively participate in live draft at Vinny’s (ranking your pics is still suggested)
    a. Login to Internet required.
    b. You must arrive on time and have a compatible (for wireless) laptop.
c.You are responsible to fill all positions.

Immediately after the draft is completed, all teams will be “locked” for 2 days to prevent any trades and waivers. This is to be fair to any managers who could not attend the live draft.

Scoring system:

"Performance League". In these leagues, attention is focused on other aspects of a player's performance besides just how many times he can reach the end zone. Touchdowns still constitute the most important statistic to add fantasy points, while other statistics are considered, such as yardage, whether it be passing, rushing, receiving - even return yardage - in some hardcore leagues. Completions, receptions and any other stat that is susceptible of being recorded can be used. Even negative stats like interceptions, lost fumbles or missed field goals can be taken in account as negative fantasy points.

Team names:
Team names should not be offensive and demeaning in any way; the Commish reserves the right to deny, delete or change names. It is also encouraged for managers to keep their team names throughout the entire season, as changing a team’s name is confusing to other managers and defeats the purpose of having a team name.
